As per usual, the Golden Globe nominations were a chaotic blend of solid picks and absolute insanity. Raging about Jared Leto and James Corden getting nods while Da 5 Bloods and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga received snubs gave film fans a jolting return to normalcy in an award season that’s been anything but. Yet, it’s important to remember that the Globes are determined by less than a hundred people, the secretive members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. For all the attention their award show gets, it’s not a reliable source to predict how the Oscar noms might go. With all that in mind, we look to the SAG Award nominations.

Because the Screen Actors Guild Awards actually have crossover with the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences, their nomination list could give us a real sense of who the contenders for Oscars 2021 might be for the acting categories, and potentially Best Picture.

The Good news: Maria Bakalova continues to gain momentum for her jaw-dropping performance in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, as does Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman. Minari got some well-deserved recognition, as has Da 5 Bloods, and One Night in Miami.

The Bad News: Leto got another nom for a bad performance in a bad movie. Glenn Close got a nod, presumably for saying “neutral Terminator” with a straight face. Nothing for the universally heralded Never Rarely Sometimes Always. Still no love for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Pardon me, while I go and blast “Ja Ja Ding Dong” from the hill on which I will die.
