All these years, I’d never watched a minute of HBO’s Hard Knocks until this year. I was genuinely curious about the drama Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets might generate. To my consternation, the Jets looked good, and to my utter disbelief, Aaron Rodgers was charming and likable—damn it.

Granted, the guy is still peculiar, has deeply rooted idiosyncrasies, and boasts a bizarre recent dating history. But I’ll give him this: He’s self-aware, self-deprecating (he mocks his own self-image), and is genuinely beloved and respected by his new teammates. This is especially true for the quarterback he’s currently replacing, Zach Wilson, who resembles a new Philip Rivers model. Additionally, the friendship between Rodgers and Randall Cobb—whom he brought from the Packers—is admirable. While Cobb probably should’ve retired, he makes a good mentor.

I’m still not on board with the anti-vaxxer stance, but I’m no longer actively rooting against Rodgers. If the J-E-T-S collapse, I’ll undoubtedly find joy in that. Meanwhile, Rodgers remains unapologetically passionate about his belief in UFOs. In this week’s season finale of Hard Knocks, he eagerly recounts his UFO sighting with the enthusiasm of a kid in a candy store. He’s clearly well-practiced at telling this story, and he does it well. It’s “like a scene out of Independence Day.”

It will be intriguing to see how long the harmony in the Jets’ locker room lasts after the Buffalo Bills dominate them in the season’s Monday Night Football opener. Good luck to all your NFL teams, unless you’re a Pats fan.
