It’s nice to have a good boss! It also isn’t guaranteed. Here (Pajiba), I’m lucky (Dustin rulez). Elsewhere, I have been less fortunate. I once had a boss who would leave (mostly) empty wine cups on my desk (around noon). Another titan of industry smirked at me when I pointed out that his company was scamming old people. One guy once banged his hand on his desk and yelled, “I don’t care if it’s illegal, just do it!” It’s tough out there! Just not for the people at Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Meyers has always appeared friendly to his staff. Not only his writers or actors, either. There are asides and moments throughout the year that show someone well-liked because he treats people with kindness and respect. Not respect like how you feel when you see someone nail a well-executed tap dance routine. I’m talking about basic human respect. It goes a long way and has clearly impacted Meyers’s staff.
The crew at Late Night threw a surprise party for Seth for his 50th birthday. They pulled out all the stops. It’s a testament to the show that they have such a well-oiled machine to pull this off without a hitch. A cynical part of me would say that they only did this for the content or what have you. But I genuinely think Seth Meyers is liked and even loved by his staff, and I think he feels the same.
