I Am Legend was released in 2007. Since its debut, it has taken on a bit of internet fame. There is a good chance that you have seen a Zergnet headline about a movie “predicting” that there would be a Batman/Superman movie. The film in question could technically be the Michael Keaton starring Jack Frost. In this case, we’re talking about a giant billboard in I Am Legend that combines Superman and Batman symbols. The Will Smith movie has also gained online notoriety for the alternate ending included on its DVD.

**Spoilers Ahead For A 17-year-old Movie**

Dr. Robert Neville, played by Smith, sacrifices himself in the theatrical ending of I Am Legend. His selflessness allows for a cure for a virus that has ravaged humanity to make its way to survivors. He becomes a “legend” for his actions. The DVD for the film included a more ambiguous ending. Smith’s character survives, abandoning experiments he’s performed on infected humans. It is closer to what happens at the end of the book. It’s also, apparently, the “canon” ending.

Because the alternate ending is considered canon, there will be a sequel. The sequel was announced two years ago, with Akiva Goldsman returning to write it, Will Smith returning to star, and Michael B. Jordan joining the film to star and produce alongside Smith. The announcement brought surprise and excitement—at least it did until about three weeks later when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock live on television.

There has been enough coverage of “The Slap” to last a lifetime, so I won’t recount the details here. What I will say is that many viewed it as a death knell for Smith’s career. It’s two years later, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. A new Bad Boys film starring Smith and Martin Lawrence releases today. The Gettin’ Jiggy With It star was on Hot Ones this week. Michael B. Jordan is expressing his excitement about the I Am Legend sequel.

Jordan chatted with People Magazine and talked about the sequel and how it is in the works. “We’re still working on the script and getting that up to par,” he continued. “It doesn’t have a release date or anything like that. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going to be filming that one, but I’m really excited to get in front of the camera with him [Smith].” The Creed star did not hide his reverence for Smith, adding that he’s “somebody that I’ve looked up to for a really long time, [so] to be able to work with Will is something I’m really looking forward to. I’m really excited.”

Movies go into and out of development all of the time. It’s been two years since this film was announced and it doesn’t even have a script yet. Jordan’s excitement may end up being for naught. Still, it’s pretty clear that the end of Smith’s career and the death of his character in I Am Legend are things that aren’t written in stone.
