I don’t like the phrase “Ride or Die,” and where I see it most often — reality television — it always seems to precede someone screwing someone else over. All the same, I did not hate Bad Boys 3, which is what I recall may have been the last big movie released along with Sonic the Hedgehog before the pandemic ruined the rest of our 2020 and most of 2021. The third installment breathed new life into the franchise and gave Will Smith one of his few big hits since his heyday, and gave Martin Lawrence since, like, Big Momma’s House. Remember when men used to wear fatsuits and play women in $100 million blockbusters? And yet, we complain about the quality of movies today.
Anyway, here’s the trailer for the fourth film in the franchise. I’m not going to lie: It looks fun. It’s hard to beat Will Smith when he’s at his best, and the action comedy is such a rarity these days that I’m weirdly looking forward to Bad Boys 4 and its ’90s era drug busts.
Note, too, that most detectives are allowed to retire at 50 years of age or after 30 years of service. It’s been 29 since the first Bad Boys movie. Will Smith is 15 years older than Danny Glover was when he was “too old for this shit” in the original Lethal Weapon movie.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die hits theaters on June 7th.
