I Really, Really Don't Know What To Think Of This

I’m sure it won’t be a surprise to many people who read this site regularly to hear that I’m a fan of cover versions—in general, but especially those found on YouTube these days. Somehow, gradually, over the years, these artists who record alternative versions of popular songs have become one of my internet viewing mainstays. YouTube can be a cesspit in terms of content—and the less said about its business model the better—but damn does it deliver when it comes to music. I wish it had been about when I was a teenager and my mind was in its most febrile state when it came to music—not that it’s lessened much, but still.

My latest cover obsession is one that’s making me feel completely differently to most of the others. Rather than the joy or awe that usually comes with one of these, here I find myself drowning in confusion. Befuddlement. Sheer unhinged disorientation. Check it out, this is YouTuber Todd Barriage covering Metallica in a pop punk style. I just can’t tell if I love it or not!
