If there’s one thing that’s been useful about the terrifying fascist ascendancy following the American presidential election (we really need to look for silver linings at times like this), it’s been the unmasking of the technofeudalist elite and a full reveal of their motivations. The image of the heads of Facebook, Amazon, and Google all lining up to kiss the ring of the new emperor became instantly iconic and emblematic for the era we live in, defined by rampant exploitation and personal data mining in the name of ever-increasing profits on a burning planet. Securing the bag before civilization collapses—and establishing coercive control structures so that when it does all go t*ts up they can continue to do so—that’s the name of the game! The funny thing is that these tech companies can’t even pretend to be offering good products or services like they once used to bother to try to do. Instead of a useful or exciting new feature, you now get tech bosses just straight up telling workers to put in sixty-hour work weeks so that they can create the means of their own job destruction.
