I was a Junior in High School when Stephen Colbert hosted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. I didn’t know what the dinner was, just that Colbert compared George W. Bush’s presidency to the Titanic. My science teacher, Mr. Broeder, told our class he didn’t like that. He also spent most of that year teasing a student by asking if their favorite movie was Brokeback Mountain because some things just add up. Members of The Daily Show seem to anger the worst people when they host the Correspondents’ Dinner, so I’m thrilled to learn that Roy Wood Jr. will keep that tradition alive!

Roy is a current correspondent (and possible replacement host?) on The Daily Show. He will join the likes of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Larry Wilmore, Michelle Wolf, Hasan Minhaj, and Trevor Noah when he hosts the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Wood Jr.’s name fits very well among these comedy heavyweights. His sharp wit, good nature, and no-nonsense attitude (that will occasionally allow nonsense) make him a great member of The Daily Show and a perfect fit for the WHCD. Primarily because he won’t pull any punches, and the WHCD seems to want that.

Even in high school, I didn’t understand the point of the dinner. To bring things back to Mr. Broeder, he loved to rag on students and act like he had a good sense of humor about himself. He did not! If you decided to return one of his jabs or barbs with one of your own, he would spend the whole next day acting like you killed his puppy. Even though he invited the mocking! The WHCD always feels the same way. Even in the calmest years, there will be someone who gets unnecessarily upset.

Why pretend? Why put on the dinner every year, only to recoil in horror at the hosts they hand-selected? At least we get some Roy Wood Jr. out of the deal.
