I was shocked to see people so excited about their favorite shows/movies/actors winning at the Golden Globes this year. I’ve said it here already, but HFPA has f***ed up royally and often. All of that information is available. You could say, with plenty of evidence, that the Golden Globes don’t matter. That’s what Marc Maron did.

The comedian and podcast legend took to his show to discuss the Golden Globes host, Jo Koy. Koy’s… everything did not go over well. While I don’t necessarily agree with Maron defending Koy specifically (don’t blame your writers, Jo), I appreciate Maron pointing out the obvious. As the host was quick to say, the Globes “don’t f***in’ matter much anyway.”

Maron called the awards show a “sham.” He’s not wrong. Toward the end of my time doing stand-up comedy, I realized that stand-up was never the end goal. It was always screenwriting. So, I decided to take all of my energy and focus it on my actual end goal. I feel similarly when people say things like, “If they get the Golden Globe, they might get the Oscar!”

It’s always about the Oscars when it comes to awards in film (and the Emmys for television). No aspiring actor or actress is standing in front of their mirror and daydreaming about thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. They aren’t praying that they win Best Actor In A Musical Or Comedy. It’s all nonsense.

Maybe, someday, the Golden Globes will just disappear. I honestly thought that had already happened. Then we won’t have to hear the thousandth story about how the host wasn’t any good. It’s old. It’s hack. To quote Maron once again, “[t]hey don’t f***in’ matter much anyways.”

You can listen to the whole episode of WTF here (and you should because Greta Gerwig is the guest).
