I was perplexed to see so many people online last night get excited about the Golden Globes. I was under the impression that for myriad reasons, people weren’t watching the Golden Globes. It turns out that time, some diversity hires, and throwing every award possible at crowd-favorite shows heals all wounds. I’ve been guilty of Award Blinders myself. Still, it is fascinating how people will ignore a company’s controversies as long as their favorite celeb of the day gets a shiny trophy.
To put it mildly, I was struggling to find something from the Golden Globes worth covering. A host blaming his writers for his jokes not going well mere months after a successful WGA strike sounds exhausting. I’ve never been a red-carpet person, but I understand why some people are. Despite moving/having two kids/being perpetually tired, I saw many of the shows nominated this year; I just didn’t necessarily care if they won a Golden Globe. I thought I would ignore the ceremony entirely and find a sneaky way to talk about the Russels being on Conan. Then, a magnificent little scamp made his way onto my feed.
Kieran Culkin took home a Golden Globe last night for his work in Succession. It is well deserved. He’s always been good on the show, but this season saw him broken down, built back up, and broken down some more. Culkin (who already has an impressive career) did some of his best work on the show’s final season. He deserved the award, even if the people presenting it to him suck.
Speaking of suck (f***ing nailed that segue), Culkin took a playful shot at fellow nominee Pedro Pascal during his acceptance speech. “Suck it, Pedro,” he said to an amused Pascal. In addition to the call-out, his speech was brief, funny, and ended with an emotional charge. It’s delightful to see Culkin “get his flowers,” as the children say. Congrats, Golden Globes. Now, everyone will forget that you didn’t diversify your voting pool until you were told to.
