John Oliver kicked off Last Week Tonight in 2014, and a year later, Jon Stewart took his leave from The Daily Show, and a few months after that, Stephen Colbert kicked off his run on The Late Show. Since that time, The Late Show has risen to the top-rated late-night series, while Last Week Tonight is easily the most awarded, essentially replacing The Daily Show as the annual winner at The Emmys.
Now, John Oliver and Stephen Colbert’s old boss is back, hosting The Daily Show weekly, on Mondays, from February 12th through the election. The reaction has been mostly positive, although some see it as a sign of desperation for late-night and others think that Stewart will overshadow The Daily Show correspondents set to host the rest of the week.
John Oliver, for one, was stunned to hear of the news, which broke while Oliver was on The Today Show. “I mean, that’s, that is a surprise. That’s a show that needs a host. He certainly is a very, very good one. So yeah, it’ll be exciting to see what he does.”
Agreed, and while he will overshadow the other correspondents, he will also bring much more attention to The Daily Show, not just on Mondays but for the rest of the week. Stewart has also not only agreed to host on Mondays but be an executive producer on the show through 2024 and potentially beyond. That means he may also have a hand in finding a permanent replacement after the election, and John Oliver, anyway, has a couple of people in mind, suggesting Roy Wood, Jr. and Amber Ruffin as excellent replacements.
“But it’s going to be very exciting to see Jon again in an election year,” Oliver added.
It’s true, but we also know who is not excited: Arby’s!
Jon Stewart returns to The Daily Show on February 12th, which will air on Paramount+ the next day.
