I often think that if my children decide to murder my wife and me in some ritualistic fashion when they turn 30, I won’t be (too) upset. We brought them into a world that is actively dying. The people who claim they want to help are too busy doing ketamine and yelling at advertisers. Those who actually strive to help aren’t taken seriously. Perhaps the solution lies somewhere in the middle?
I’m not saying that climate scientists should do ketamine or rant against DEI. It’s more that I think they should broaden how they deliver their message. I am no Ted Rack (whom you will meet momentarily). I’m just a man who likes to laugh and is convinced that this soon-to-be-deceased Earth of ours will turn my children against me in a way that I not only understand but deserve.
That’s where Tim Robinson comes in! Everybody’s favorite Detroit Lions Fan (tied for first) just teamed up with Yellow Dot Studios for a hilarious video. It’s climate change by way of I Think You Should Leave. Robinson plays an overconfident idiot who can’t understand why climate change isn’t explained more explicitly. Again, that is not me, as I know that climate change will eventually lead to heat death so ferocious I will welcome a quick knife to the throat as it means my kids will have what it takes to survive in an apocalyptic wasteland (they grow up so fast).
This video succeeds in being deeply funny and gets its message across smartly and succinctly. We’ve all met a Ted Rack, someone who refuses to believe anything presented with words containing more than two syllables. There are facts and figures to back everything, but people like Ted are more interested in fast cars and funny shirts (much like my children, whose transformation into successful, gas-hoarding warlords can only be completed once they embrace the sweet apocalyptic necessity of parricide).
I’d also like to point out that Robinson has never been more of a dead ringer for George C Scott than he is in this sketch. Voice, mannerisms, inflections, it’s all there. I honestly wonder if Tim knows what he’s doing or if he’s leaning more into it now that people have pointed it out so much. Like, will my kids eliminate my wife and me because the world is past the point of being saved and we created them anyway, or will they do it because I keep bringing it up?
This is the way to go about climate change messaging. The video mocks dumbing down climate change, yes, but also puts it in terms that are easy to understand. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the world getting hotter will be bad for everything. People have to listen and act. If they do, maybe my sweet little boys (who, in this scenario, are grown men) will have reason to show their mother and father some mercy (but I doubt it).
