Jon Stewart left The Daily Show back in 2015, and there were more than a few people who thought that, had he stuck around, maybe Donald Trump would not have been elected in 2016.
Jon Stewart is gonna get another crack at it.
The comedian, who left his Apple TV+ series last year over creative differences (he thought China was fair game; Apple disagreed), will be returning to host The Daily Show. There is a catch: He’ll only be hosting on Mondays, beginning on February 12th, and going through the election. The rest of the week’s shows will be hosted by existing news correspondents Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, and Dulcé Sloan.
This is probably why The Daily Show did not settle on a new permanent host. This will significantly boost The Daily Show ratings, at least on Mondays (episodes will also air the next day on Paramount+).
I don’t know if it will make any difference in the upcoming election, but I think it’s a brilliant idea. No one — and I mean no one — insults Donald Trump better than Jon Stewart, and in a political environment where insults and taunts can move the polls, Jon Stewart is the guy to have on our side.
“Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season,” said Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios (via THR). “In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.”
