Apple TV+ has canceled The Problem with Jon Stewart over what is being called “creative differences,” which was really about a tech company worried about alienating customers. Apple — the company that makes iPhones in China — had “concerns about some of the guests booked” and “Stewart’s intended discussions of artificial intelligence and China.” When Apple asked Stewart to line up behind their expectations, Jon Stewart walked.

Jon Stewart made a principled stand, which is great. Unfortunately, it also means that his very good show will be ending. To be honest, however, aside from a few very good interviews that have gone viral, I didn’t watch the series often. I did listen to his podcast every week, and as issue-based podcasts go, it was one of the best. Where John Oliver spends half an hour digging deep into an issue in a news format with jokes, Jon Stewart brings in experts — not pundits — and interviews them for half an hour or more on certain topics. I hope Stewart finds a way to continue to podcast. There were so many episodes I either thought, “This sounds boring,” or “I already know everything there is to know about this,” and yet I always came away both entertained and educated. His voice is very much needed right now. A clip from The Daily Show has gone viral in recent days, but this is a better, more nuanced one.

Netflix will also end Elite — a Spanish teen drama — after its eighth season. The seventh season just premiered.

In renewals, Prime Video has wisely renewed The Boys spin-off, Gen V, which I actually like more than The Boys, which is also good, but felt toxic last season.

Netflix has picked up the very popular Sweet Magnolias for a fourth season, while NBC has decided to bring back Jimmy Fallon’s novelty series That’s My Jam for a third season. For those who haven’t seen it, That’s My Jam can be very fun — depending on the guests — for five or six episodes, but it grows stale quickly.
