Please Let The Keanu Reeves Weezer Rumors Be True

I don’t ask for much. I want my seltzers cold and my Cheez-It crackers extra toasty. Walking down the street, I want my shoes to be comfy, my hoodie to be a little snug, and my Texas Rangers hat not to be too sweaty. When I watch a movie, I want it to be scary, but not so scary that I have to check on my kids. These are all reasonable requests. They are comforts in a cruel and uncomfortable world. They also reflect parts of my personality. Since my personality has been permanently linked to the band Weezer, I’m allowed to demand that the new rumors about the band and Keanu Reeves be true.

First and foremost, let’s start with the part of the rumor that we know to be true: there is going to be a Weezer movie. I don’t know what to do with that information. I’ve loved Weezer ever since I laid eyes on them rocking out with The Muppets. I’ll always happily take more Weezer in any form. But, usually, that form is an album (or four). While I’ve always enjoyed Rivers and crew being playful and fun in their videos, I don’t know how that extends to a feature film.

The movie is rumored to be a mockumentary-style flick, so that could excuse some of the acting (I assume). There can be an inherent silliness to it that could work in its favor. Also, people seemed to like the Foo Fighters’ horror-comedy film Studio 666. But Dave Grohl is a bit more charismatic than my beloved Rivers Cuomo (though Grohl has done irreparable damage to his persona in the last year and change). That’s also where other actors can come in handy.

It wasn’t just that Rivers told the crowd at Coachella that a Weezer film was on the way. Ben Schwartz was also in attendance, helping direct the crowd during a scene. Juliette Lewis, Eric Andre, and Johnny Knoxville are also allegedly in the film, which is being described as a cross between Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Given everything I just wrote, I would already be onboard for this movie. But there’s more, because Ben Schwartz isn’t the only member of the Sonic franchise involved in Weezer’s first movie.

If The InSneider is to be believed, Keanu Reeves will play the villain in the film. This wouldn’t be Reeves’ first connection to the group. Weezer famously had their first gig opening for Reeves’ band Dogstar, and they made a song for the newest Bill & Ted movie, the music video for which included Reeves and his most excellent co-star Alex Winter. Seeing the onscreen hitman terrorize the group in a mockumentary would be a blast and a wonderful full-circle moment.

I hope it’s all true. The rumors could be false. Scheduling conflicts could throw wrenches into the plans. The movie may never be released. Who knows?! I’ll wait until I see an official announcement or a trailer before I get too excited. But it looks like we’re getting a Weezer movie featuring a rad cast that includes Keanu Reeves as the villain. I really hope that’s true.
