At the end of August, we learned that Anne Hathaway would be joining Tom Cruise in a sequel to Days of Thunder. Two A-list stars working together shouldn’t be surprising, but Hathaway’s career is strapped to a rocket right now while Cruise is going the opposite direction. Sure, Top Gun: Maverick was a massive hit, but the final two Mission: Impossible films limped along, and now Cruise is sitting on a certified bomb with Digger.
Tom Cruise needs Anne Hathaway way more than Anne Hathaway needs Tom Cruise, and that dynamic just came into stark contrast this week. With Verity a box office smash, Anne has leaned down from Mt. Olympus to grace Digger with her blessing. Also, apparently she’s on Letterboxd. You learn something new everyday.
“I loved this brilliant movie,” Hathaway wrote. “It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious. It’s worth making the time see and decide for yourself what you make of it.
For me? 10/10 ”
First off, I love that she missed a word back there. As a typo machine with fingers that work faster than my brain, I’ve never felt more seen. Second, nice dig at critics there, Anne. I wonder why she included that…
Seriously, though, this move is about as transparent as it gets. Anne is about to hitch her star wagon to Tom Cruise, and the last thing she needs is Digger dragging them both down. Her review on Letterboxd is already making headlines across on all the major outlets and our little soapbox in the corner. (Thank you for your service.) Will it shift public perception on Digger? Not unless Anne’s review can transform it into a completely different movie, but more importantly, it shows that she’s a team player. Jumping on a grenade for a future co-star while you have the number one box office in America will not go unnoticed.
