You know that thing where it’s dinner time, and sure, you’re hungry, but more than that, you’re g*dd*mn bone tired. All you can muster to make is a cheese plate and pour a glass of wine. Let’s be real, even the term “cheese plate” is generous. It’s maybe a hunk of Kraft chopped off the block, but hey, it’s a pandemic. Not every meal needs to be Instagram-worthy. ANYWAY, good news: this is actually good for you.

The New York Post reports a research study out of Iowa State University declares cheese and wine are good for your brain. Specifically, the consumption of cheese and wine can help protect against cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s Disease.

Over the past ten years, researchers in the United Kingdom have been keeping up with 1,787 people ages 46 to 77, having the subjects complete Fluid Intelligence Tests. They’ve also tracked what their subject eat. As such:

Researchers determined that when it came to measuring a food’s impact on brain functioning, cheese was found to be the most likely to thwart cognitive decline as participants got older. The findings also showed that daily red wine consumption boosted brain function.

Further study is merited, but these early findings also suggest lamb is good for improving long-term cognitive ability. Not great for your brain: all other red meats and an excess of salt.

In a statement, Dr. Auriel Willette, a lead author on the study, gave us some of the best news 2020 has offered, saying, “I was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that responsibly eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current COVID-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down.”

Hear that? Eating cheese is responsible now. So, kick back, cut into your night cheese, and toast with some red wine. Your brain will thank you.
