Coleman Domingo is having A Moment this year. He’s been nominated for multiple awards for his portrayal of controversial civil rights leader Bayard Rustin. And he’s part of the The Color Purple ensemble, which has also received a lot of attention. It looks like Domingo will be all booked up next awards season too once his upcoming project, A24’s Sing Sing, which premiered to an intense audience response at TIFF, opens in theaters later this year.
Sing Sing is based on the true story of John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield and the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program. It also stars Paul Raci (Sound of Metal), and will premiere in theaters this July.
Sieze Them! looks fun. Monty Python’s Holy Grail set a standard for this sort of charmingly ridiculous parody of royalty that I’m sure this will fall short of. But never underestimate Nick Frost, Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls), or Lolly Adefope (Miracle Workers, Shrill).
Who knows if, or when, I’ll get to see this to do a true comparison. Sieze Them! only has an April 5th release date in the UK and Ireland. I guess that’s fair since it’s an Entertainment Film Distributors picture.
Glen Powell is awfully popular these days and I don’t understand why. Maybe Richard Linklater’s new movie, Hit Man, will help me figure it out. Glen Powell co-wrote the script with Linklater, a true story based on this Texas Monthly article.
The film also stars Andor’s Adria Arjona, Retta (Parks and Recreation, Good Girls), Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead), Sanjay Rao (The Flight Attendant), Molly Bernard (Chicago Med, Younger), and Evan Holtzman (Hidden Figures).
Hit Man will have a limited theatrical release before being available to stream on Netflix on June 7.
If you’re looking for someone to tell you that Nic Cage makes a lot of bad movies you should look elsewhere, and I think most of you know that by now. I’m not a stan, but I am a fan and I have a great deal of respect for the actor. He brings the same energy and intensity to every role, regardless of the quality. That’s a dedication and love of craft that not everyone has. If I ever write a movie script, I want him in it.
This week’s lagniappe is Cage’s upcoming Arcadian. It looks like someone stole pages from A Quiet Place, and I Am Legend, and threw them together with some scenes from The Village but I’m still going to watch it.
