George Miller is bringing back his Mad Max universe, honing in on a Furiosa prequel spin-off. The 75-year-old director will not be bringing back Charlize Theron for the title role, but he has cast a future superstar in her own right, Anya Taylor-Joy. The name may not immediately ring any bells, but she’ll look familiar to most who have seen Split and Glass, and for the 12 people who saw The New Mutants. She also had a recurring run in Peaky Blinders last year, and recently starred in Emma, a romantic comedy based on the Jane Austen novel. Her upcoming chess drama The Queen’s Gambit out later this month is already also starting to amass a lot of buzz.

Joining Anya Taylor-Joy will be Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the latter of whom just won a well-deserved Emmy for his role in Watchmen opposite Regina King. Abdul-Mateen II also plays Bobby Seale in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago Seven, out this month on Netflix.

The prequel, which will also be co-written by George Miller, will track the genesis of Furiosa before the events of Fury Road, which was not only Pajiba’s top film of 2015 but ranked by us as the top film of the 2010s.

Meanwhile, Charlize Theron says she’s “heartbroken” that she’ll have to sit out the prequel, despite her on-set difficulties with her Fury Road co-star, Tom Hardy.
