JoJo Siwa is growing up. The Dance Moms breakout who has become a singer/dancer/Youtube sensation turned 17 today. So, she's leaving some childish things behind, including--it seems--her signature look.
Typically, Siwa is swathed in boldly girly garbs, drenched in glitter, with her beaming face topped by a super tight ponytail and an oversized bow. However, yesterday afternoon the teen star took to TikTok to let her hair down, literally.

At present, we're all just speculating on the meanings of Siwa's makeover. Some are falling into the toxic expectation that a child star growing up means she must transform through a salacious phase. Some are speculating about the sexual orientation of a minor, which is tricky. On one hand, the privacy of children's personal lives should be respected--as should those of adults frankly. However, much of the "tiktok lesbian" tweets seemed welcoming of the queer identity they felt Siwa was suggesting. It's not a condemnation but a presumptuous celebration.
Ultimately, many are expecting that Siwa will rise with a bold new vision for her future. Yet, this makeover may not be permanent. This might be a "felt cute might delete later" moment. For now, we just don't know.
As for Siwa, all she's offering is a follow-up vid of her rocking out to Rihanna's "Umbrella," doing the Tom Holland drag queen dance.
