Conan O’Brien likes to rag on people. Part of the charm of the quick-witted giant is his ability to rattle off ribs at the expense of his guests and employees. Many people working for Conan can go zinger for zinger with the mountainous redhead. Others stand there and take it until they snap (looking at you, Schlansky). Lots of celebrities grew up watching Conan and enjoy getting mocked by him; some play along with his games. Harrison Ford turns the tables on Conan before he even has a chance to breathe.
Harrison Ford can be a bit of a cantankerous interview. Sitting with Conan brings that out in spades. He is friendly, yes, but he doesn’t hide his cranky side. If anything, he leans into it. In the past, he has yelled at Conan, teased him, and joined O’Brien in lambasting Jordan Schlansky. If Ford didn’t make so many appearances on the show, you might think he’s not even enjoying himself.
Conan and Harrison’s back and forth was on full display in the latest episode of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend. Ford starts things off by saying he’s confused about being Conan’s friend and doesn’t let up from there. Within 30 seconds, he asks, “What can you say on a podcast,” and when Conan tells him, “anything,” Ford shoots back, “Well, then, f**k you.” He takes shots at everyone in the room. He also goes out of his way to compliment Conan and his staff. The man is having fun, and his way of having fun is to give it to Conan before Conan gives it to him (phrasing, etc.).
Ford is in his 80s. I’m surprised he sat down to do a podcast at all. It shows that Ford likes Conan’s schtick, and he may be better at it than the host himself.
