Ah, classic Simpsons. Will you ever stop being a reliable source of internet #content? No. you won’t. I know you won’t. Especially not when Josh Weinstein is on the prowl, as he so often is, with his beautiful Simpsons Twitter prompts. Weinstein was at it again the other day when he referenced the classic, ‘So I says to Mabel, I says’, line as one of his favourite, standalone lines in the show’s history. Other Twitter users quickly jumped in to share theirs, and while some of them fit (the admittedly rather loose) criteria better than others, they are all—naturally—glorious. Really, it’s just an excuse to post Simpsons jokes, and who can’t get behind that:
Story behind "I says to Mabel"

Homer story in Chili ep was so full we had no room for kids B story
So when Homer asks them where Marge is, they have nothing going on. What they're doing that moment had to be 100% freestanding
Hence, Mabel

And to be clear, because people have asked about this often, the Mabel line does not reference anything, it never appeared in a book or movie or anything. As far as I know, it is totally freestanding in the human timeline. pic.twitter.com/nCGnIW6PhI

It's a term a lot of TV executives used at the time. Usually in reference to making the main character more active in a story, to make them be more a driving force - good or bad - in the story. So they are not just a passive person stuff happens to. It's annoying but useful!

Nelson’s line about picking berries that Skinner overhears and he pivots to saying he was beating someone up is joint with this line.
