There's truly nothing like classic Simpsons. I can return to the infinitely rich well that is the show's golden age again and again, focusing in on its random lines, or jokes that were written so convincingly so as to mimic reality--or indeed dedicating a whole piece to just one scene. There's just so much to comb over and recap and reappraise, it's obscene. Today the focus here is on a facet of the show that is so charming and so funny that I can't believe we've not covered it already: The animation. Compared to its earlier (up until about season 6 or so) years, there's a glossy lifelessness to The Simpsons that starts to creep in sometime after season 10, and certainly after the show goes digital in season 14. But before all that, the show had a wild and unpredictable animation style, its episodes littered with strange angles and gonzo interstitial frames where familiar characters would briefly morph into bizarro versions of themselves--and it was glorious! It's from this era that some of the funniest, most unique faces the characters ever pulled come from. Twitter had this topic on its mind the other day, when it pondered the best faces that Homer ever pulled. It's a sublime collection.

Homer: "Mmm."
Marge: "What was that? Was that a yes or a no?"
Homer: "Buh."
Marge: "Those aren't even words!"
Homer: "Snuh!"
