It was World Cinema Day last weekend, so naturally, I took advantage of the three quid offerings by seeking out a film that I’d been wanting to see but which I’d not managed to get out to see yet—and that I’d somehow managed to avoid pretty much all spoilers for: Nope. As it turned out, the screening was an IMAX one, which I think was the right way to maximise the enjoyment of Jordan Peele’s big, bold, and beautiful messy mess. I enjoyed it a lot, but was left wanting a little bit more. A grand spectacle with plenty of thrills, tension, and excellent framing, Nope clearly demonstrates (yet again) that Peele has directorial skill to spare, yet it also felt undeveloped—especially when it came to its characters and their relationships. Its thematic ambitions might not quite have been matched by its delivery either, but whatever shortcomings it did have it still left me excited to see what the filmmaker would do next. That excitement was stoked earlier today when I caught the newly released Honest Trailers for Nope, as watching scenes from the film reminded me how easy it was to ignore the film’s weaker aspects while being swept away by its popcorn currents. Here, enjoy, and, obviously, here be spoilers!
