Movie trailers are an evolving art form. Many of us remember a time when they were essentially defined in popular consciousness by the voice of Don LaFontaine. In my mind, that is still the dominant format that on some levels I expect any new movie trailer to take, despite the fact that the man himself passed away all the way back in 2008, and that since then the industry has cycled through a number of different tropes of the form (notable examples including the Inception ‘Bwaaaahm!’ and the use of slowed-down melancholy covers of pop songs). Well here’s a fun little experiment, demonstrating the change in movie trailers over the years, featuring the trailer for 1998’s Armageddon and a fan-made version of the trailer that updates its stylings for 2023:
