I remember a few years ago when I first stumbled upon a video from a YouTube channel called the ‘Critical Drinker’. It was quite the whiplash roller coaster of an experience. I can’t recall exactly which video it was, but I remember the very fast and very jolting journey from, ‘Hell yeah, somebody agreeing with me about the dire state of so much of the modern movie industry’, to, ‘Oh. Oh no. Oh well, I guess now my algorithm’s doomed to languish in redpill fuc*ery as a result of this!’

Like all the most effective right-wing propagandists in history, it was near immediately apparent that this YouTube channel was using the classic tools of the trade: Identify some area of legitimate dissatisfaction, briefly describe it in a somewhat accurate way, and then proceed to shift gears and direction rapidly to misdiagnose and misdirect the rage arising from that dissatisfaction at completely the wrong target so as to protect the real culprits. Unemployment at a record high and living standards plummeting? Can’t be the fault of an economic system designed to siphon off wealth from the poor to the rich, must be those damn immigrants! In the ‘Drinker’s’ case, the tactic is certainly working, as the guy has 2.35 million subscribers—granted on a monopoly platform with a cartoonishly heavy reactionary bias and interest in protecting the status quo, but still.

Thankfully, even on that grim platform, some decent voices remain. Like, in this instance, the channel ‘Man Carrying Thing’. He usually does shorter form sketch-style videos, like this one:

In this case, however, he has delivered a really effective dissection of the ‘Critical Drinker’ channel—and those like it—and has done so still in a blessedly non-90 mins runtime. Check it out:
