Patton Oswalt hosted the Writers Guild Awards ceremony this weekend, and among the highlights in his monologue was Oswalt’s desire that Deadpool win best picture; a shout-out to Jewish producers, the real heroes who greenlit the year’s celebrated African-American led films Loving, Moonlight, and Hidden Figures; and a joke about how Ryan Murphy called Oswalt a “healthy Steve Bannon” in his audition for American Horror Story (add Oswalt to the fancasting).
Donald Trump was also a topic of conversation, but Oswalt wanted to “be very careful making jokes about Trump because I don’t want to be kicked to death by James Woods backstage,” a joke that prompted virulent right-winger Woods — sitting in the front row — to climb on stage and remove Oswalt’s shoe.” “Buy a fucking pair of shoes,” Woods said, referring to the sneakers Oswalt was wearing. “This is an awards show for God’s sake.”
Woods then noted that he lost half his Twitter following by coming to the WGAs, to which Oswalt responded. “Oh did you? Wow. All those egg avatars gone. That’s terrible!”
It was a nevertheless friendly confrontation, and even Woods laughed at Oswalt’s comparison of Donald Trump and David Lee Roth.
