Alex Garland’s Ex Machine has been on my radar for quite some time. Since the end of Battlestar Galactica, and other series that explored artificial intelligence and the greater themes of what it means to be self-conscious beings, it always feels like there’s an important dish missing from the table. The real world steps we’re taking demand the conversation continue; we’re fools if we don’t thoroughly explore the moral and ethical implications of creating artificial intelligence.
Garland’s (Never Let Me Go, Sunshine) latest stars Domhnall Gleeson as Caleb, a young programmer chosen by Oscar Isaac’s Nathan to participate in an experiment involving Ava (Alicia Vikander), a stunning AI robot. Second, here’s the latest clip; Nathan asks Caleb about the Turing Test:
I have my suspicions about what may really be going on here, but even if I’m right, that only makes the film more exciting.
If you haven’t seen it, here’s the original trailer:
Ex Machina opens in the UK January 23rd; stateside, April 10th.
