Sarah wrote a great bit bidding farewell to The Colbert Report yesterday, and I wrote a bit mourning the departure back in April when his ascension to Letterman’s throne was announced. Colbert mattered, and he made a real difference in the national discourse of politics. Late Night is lucky to have him, and I still can’t help but feel a bit of disappointment despite being happy for him for his elevation. He’s leaving behind something beautiful and unique and important for something that’s bigger and badder, but despite what he brings to it will inevitably be mediocre and harmless in comparison. That’s sad.

But Colbert went off the air last night with a bang, with his final episode.
