It’s quite possible this morning that you don’t feel any confusion over last night’s episode of Sons of Anarchy, “Toil and Till.” (Read my full recap of the episode, plus by quibbles with Kurt Sutter’s fatty, bloated episode problems here). You probably understand why Jax did what he did last night with regard to the Indian Hills Chapter of SAMCRO and its president, Jury.
Let’s recap just that point in this episode. This is Jury.
In case you don’t recall his backstory, he was a very close friend Jax’s Dad, JT. In fact, Jax used to refer to Jury as his uncle. Jax also is responsible for patching Jury and the Indian Hills chapter into SAMCRO. So far as I can recall, there has never been any bad blood between Jury and Jax and the rest of Charming’s SAMCRO.
They are allies. Friends. Brothers.
Then there’s theese two guys: Their names are Gibby and Renny. They’re “local muscle” that Jury knows through “one of his whores.”
Jax’s plan to get revenge on Henry Lin and the Lin Triad (who he wrongly believes were behind the murder of Tara) is to basically ruin Lin’s organization to the point that Lin comes to Jax for help. When he does so, Jax plans to kill everyone that Lin loves and make Lin watch and suffer. Real subtle stuff.
The first stage of this plan is to disrupt one of Lin’s gun shipments. Jax and SAMCRO do so — killing several of Lin’s men — with the help of Jury, the Indian Hills chapter of SAMCRO, and Gibby and Renny. In the process, they also discover that Lin and his men trade guns for heroin. Jax and the gang take both the guns and the heroin off of Lin’s dead men.
This is one of the guns, which Jury places in SAMCRO’s van.
Jax also makes a deal with Jury to splits the proceeds from the guns and heroin with Jury and the Indian Hills gang 50/50. Meanwhile, because Gibby and Renny’s truck was demolished during the execution of the Chinese men, Jax agrees to swing by their place and compensate them for the loss.
I think most people understand the situation up until here. We also understand that Jax needs to shift the blame for the deaths of Lin’s men away from SAMCRO, so as to not arouse the suspicions of Lin or August Marks. So, Jax, Bobby, and Chibs swing by Gibby and Renny’s place and kill them and dump Lin’s heroin on them, basically pinning the blame for the deaths of Lin’s men on Gibby, Renny, and the Indian Hills SAMCRO.
The frame-up also involves making it look like Gibby and Renny killed each other. There’s only one problem: They used the gun that Jury left in their van, so when Jury pays Gibby and Renny a visit, he notices it, and obviously connects their deaths to Jax.
Even if you understand this much, there are three points of confusion for me:
1) Why would Jax choose to shift the blame onto Gibby and Renny, two stoners who were helping Jax? What the f*ck did they do? Why would Jax want to pin the blame on Gibby, Renny, and the Indian Hills SAMCRO (the “whites) when they are friends, allies, brothers! This was right after Indian Hills helped him execute the plan, and right after Jax agreed to split the profits 50/50 with Indian Hills. This makes no logical sense.
2) Or, is it possible, that Jax chose Gibby and Renny because he didn’t think there was much connection between those two and Indians Hills’ SAMCRO, and that he didn’t think Jury would care. Did he just think that they merely disposable “local muscle” that Jury knew “through his whore”? It’s still a wildly sh*tty thing to do to a couple of guys that did nothing to deserve it, but Jax is unhinged.
If that’s the case, why was Jury so upset about seeing Gibby’s dead body? Why was he even there, if they were just “muscle” he knew through his whore?
3) Moreover, why would Bobby and Chibs allow Jax simply to throw another chapter of SAMCRO under the bus? So far as I can tell, Jury and the Indian Hills SAMCRO has never done anything to warrant Jax’s animosity. And while Jax may be unhinged, it seems strange that Bobby and Chibs would just go along with a plan that meant killing their friends? Bobby and Chibs had no reservations about it. They didn’t pause to question it. They just f**king killed two kids.
Is this just a plot hole? Are there actual answers that we aren’t privy to yet? Am I overthinking this? Or is Jax stopped giving fucks to such an extent that he’ll kill anyone to get his revenge?
