It was amazing to me that a Sweet Tooth television show existed at all. Bonus points were added because it was an absolute delight. Well performed, beautifully shot, intricately written, and all while giving the show a sense of hope and optimism as opposed to the doom and gloom of the comics (though I was a fan of that as well). The show was a welcome whit of warmth in a time when things looked bleak. Now, after almost two years, Sweet Tooth has returned.
A new trailer for the second season just dropped, and it is a doozy. It appears that the show will be taking the tried and true path of escalation often associated with sequels (or, in this case, sequel seasons). The set pieces are grander. The action is bigger and more bombastic. It still feels fun and hopeful while upping the danger and intensity.
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the trailer is the heavy presence of Gus’s mother, Birdie (played by Amy Seimetz). You learn early on in the comics that Gus’s mother died long before he could remember. Not only is Gus’s mother alive in the TV show but she also seems connected to the virus that wiped out most of humanity. The show has already deviated from the comics in many ways, but the presence of Birdie is a complete departure and all the more exciting because of that.
The second season of Sweet Tooth drops on April 27th, and that cannot come soon enough. While it’s been a long wait for more episodes, I am more than happy when people take their time. This trailer looks above and beyond fantastic. Given how good the first season was, I can hope and assume the same fate for the second season. A trailer like this makes that easy.
