Hey, remember when we thought there was too much to stream between Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime? Ah, those were the days…
APPLE TV PLUS
Apple’s entry into the original content game launched November 1 and costs $4.99 per month (unless you’ve recently bought a new Apple product, in which case you get a year for free!). So, what do you get for your subscription? The service is being top-lined by four shows with big stars, lots of buzz, and some pretty varied reactions from the critics. There’s a post-apocalyptic drama called See, starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard; The Morning Show, a cutthroat look at the world of morning news starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon; an alternative take on the NASA space race from Ronald D. Moore called For All Mankind; and the quirky coming-of-age drama Dickinson, starring Hailee Steinfeld. There are also a few new children’s shows and even some Oprah, but without a doubt the smartest thing Apple did is get its stuff out there early, before it loses all the attention to…
It feels like we’ve been hearing about the media behemoth’s streaming platform for FOREVER now, but this time we mean it. Disney+ will launch on November 12th and cost $6.99 per month (or $69.99 per year), and while we know the service will be home to a mess of back catalog content (including some rather bizarre entries!), it’s the new shows that have people curious. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait for the Marvel entries to appear, but at launch you’ll get a fresh new Star Wars vehicle called The Mandalorian, which is more interesting for the assembled talent involved than it is for the shrouded plot. Pedro Pascal plays the titular… bounty hunter, I guess? Giancarlo Esposito, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and (ahem) WERNER DINGDANG HERZOG also star, while Jon Favreau, Taika Waititi, and Bryce Dallas Howard are listed amongst the directors.
There’s also a live-action reboot of Lady and the Tramp with Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux as the Lady and the Tramp, respectively, as well as a new National Geographic project called The World According To Jeff Goldblum, in which the actor unravels the surprising history of everyday things. And in clunky meta news, there’s the absolute mouthful-to-say High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which tracks the efforts of a real-life high school musical production of the Disney fictional movie, High School Musical. I think I just got high trying to wrap my head around that one.
Perhaps knowing that November would be a battlefield, Hulu only has one big title debuting this month: Dollface (November 15), a surrealist comedy starring Kat Dennings about a woman who tries to rebuild her life — and her friendships — after being dumped by her longterm boyfriend. I’m having a hard time getting a read from the trailer, which vacillates hard between “cute!” and “jarring!”, but I’ll give Hulu this: from Pen15 to Shrill and now this, they have a strong track record of investing in comedies created by and starring women.
Also, don’t forget: Castle Rock is still dropping new episodes weekly, and it’s really good this season!
Amazon has slightly more going on this month, depending on your mileage, with the second season of John Krasinski’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (yes, I did that intentionally) launching November 1 and the fourth (and final) season of The Man in the High Castle landing November 15. For films, they have Brittany Runs A Marathon, starring Jillian Bell (November 22); One Child Nation, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary about China’s 40-year long policy of only allowing families to have one child (November 8); and The Report starring Adam Driver, Annette Bening and Jon Hamm, about the investigation into the CIA’s post-9/11 Detention and Interrogation Program (November 15).
As usual, Netflix has… A LOT, including the start of their holiday programming, if that’s your thing! Though honestly, my only takeaway from their special holiday trailer is that Jason Mantzoukas is coming back for Nailed It! Holiday! Season Two (November 22) — and that is more than enough!
Their film selection this month is rock solid, with The King (starring Timothée Chalamet’s hair) landing November 1, and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman arriving November 27. But it’s Earthquake Bird, the psychological thriller starring Alicia Vikander, that I’m waiting for on November 15:
For comedy, there’s a new Seth Meyers special called Lobby Baby on November 5! For returning series, there’s the second season of The End of the F***ing World (November 5) and the third season of The Crown (November 17), now starring Olivia Colman. And for kids, there’s a new season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (November 5) and a high concept, star-studded adaptation of… Green Eggs and Ham. It’s being billed as “a postmodern Planes, Trains and Automobiles through the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss”, whatever that means (November 8).
