In a surprise announcement at tonight’s San Diego Comic-Con, Showtime revealed plans to expand its Dexter franchise with two new series. The announcement came during the panel for the previously announced Dexter: Original Sin, with unexpected appearances by Michael C. Hall and executive producer Clyde Phillips.

The first new series, Dexter: Resurrection, will see Hall reprising his role as Dexter Morgan in a present-day setting. This marks Hall’s return to the character following the original series and its controversial 2021 revival, Dexter: New Blood, which ended when Dexter was killed by his son.

That would explain the use of Resurrection in the title. Will he be brought back by science and medicine or will they inject a supernatural element. Because he was super dead. His son killed him. Dexter was so proud!

Additionally, Showtime confirmed more details about Dexter: Original Sin, which is currently in production. Set in the 1990s, this origin story will explore Dexter’s early years, with Patrick Gibson playing the young version of the character, Christian Slater playing his father, Harry, and Molly Brown (The Bear) playing Debra. Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar are also in the cast. Hall will contribute to this series as well, narrating Dexter’s inner thoughts.

Both series will have Hall and Phillips serving as executive producers, with Phillips taking on showrunner duties.

This expansion marks Showtime’s commitment to what they’re calling the “Dexter Universe.” Sigh. But yes, I will watch the sh*t out of it.

Release dates for both series have yet to be announced.
