As a pro-wrestling fan, I’m used to stars being promoted with ice cream. I’m sure that someone else has used ice cream for promotion, but that’s not my life, folks. No, I’m used to the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, and Macho Man Randy Savage gracing a cookie-coated ice cream bar as a way to get me psyched for what’s on TV. Now, I can add Conan O’Brien to that list.

Instead of producing a late-night show, Conan is doing everything else. His podcast is going strong, he has a new travel show coming to everyone’s least favorite app, and he has his own channel on Sirius XM. Now you can catch his high jinks, both old and new, around the clock on the 70,000th streaming service to end with Plus. To promote his new network, Conan took to the streets. Kind of.

Yesterday, reps from Samsung drove around NYC in an ice cream truck. They brought bright orange ice cream pops in the shape of Conan’s head and O’Brien’s longtime Associate Producer, Jordan Schlansky. Schlansky posed for pictures and, to be frank, looked less than thrilled. Maybe he was in character?

It may be the coverage he’s getting from places like Sirius and Samsung. Perhaps his podcast is even more successful than I imagine. But Conan’s popularity seems to be at an all-time high. While this isn’t a true measure of fame, and I’m sure the Samsung PR people are good at their jobs, the lines for the ice cream were pretty long, and Conan wasn’t even there! To be fair though, I live in a bit of a Conan bubble, as Dustin will surely tell you.

There’s also something inherently silly about all of this. While discussing it on his show, Conan can hardly keep himself from laughing. He often jokes about being a huge celebrity, and to be fair, he’s pretty well-known. But here, the absurdity of the situation wins out. People in NYC were shoving Conan’s head into their mouths. That sounds more like a fever dream than a promotion!
