Amazon is dropping a new and expensive Lord of The Rings show. LOTR fans are getting excited, myself included, despite feeling a little underwhelmed at first. That being said, there is likely no one more excited, than Stephen Tyrone Colbert. Mr. Colbert has long been vocal in his love of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels, and the adaptations spawned from them. Recently, he got to explore that love by hosting Amazon’s Rings of Power panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with comedian Patton Oswalt in attendance.

Oswalt was as surprised as anyone to see Colbert on stage. That being said, Colbert jumps in to reiterate that he was a surprise in a way that felt NDA-inspired, but I may be reading too much into that. Oswalt said that Colbert was the best and worst choice to moderate the panel. While Colbert was plenty enthusiastic, Oswalt says he had a hard time containing his LOTR expertise. He was “nerding out” in an “actually” kind of way if you “catch my drift.”

Oswalt’s ribbing was all in good fun, of course, but you can see Stephen’s cheeks get a little flush when he’s called out. He knows what he did! Anyone who’s ever been caught in a conversation with someone hellbent on proving they know more about a fictional world, story, etc. knows that it can feel punishing. Surely if it’s done by Stephen Colbert, it can’t be that bad!

What makes this even better is that Oswalt is, admittedly, the same kind of nerd. He’s built a whole career around it. If anyone knows when someone is “nerdsplaining” something, it is Patton Oswalt.
