In an unexpected twist in this week’s Million Little Things, Jason Ritter’s character, Eric, turns out not to be who I thought he would be. On the other hand, how was that even predictable? I thought that Eric would be the boyfriend of Maggie’s deceased brother. Turns out, Eric is the transplant recipient of Maggie’s deceased brother’s heart. That’s the big twist, and Maggie is furious with her mother for not telling her that Chad lived for 10 minutes in the hospital before he died. MAGGIE DESERVED TO KNOW! (Am I the only one who thought this was an insanely petty thing to be angry at one’s mother about?)

The point is, Maggie is angry, and look who is there to help her with her funk. It’s not Gary, who wants to be there for Maggie, but Eric, who provides the comfort that Maggie needs. Is Maggie going to fall for Eric? Is she gonna have sex with the guy who has her dead brother’s heart? Is that incest? A little? And why is Maggie flaking on Gary, who has been nothing but supportive and loving? He nursed her through cancer! I’ve heard of men leaving their wives who have cancer, but you don’t often see someone who almost dies of cancer leaving their supportive loved one for the guy who has their brother’s heart. Not that Eric isn’t great. In fact, I’d love to see Jason Ritter become a permanent fixture on A Million Little Things, but not at the expense of Gary.

Gary, however, could suitably pair up with Katherine, who spent much of the week appropriately freaking out because her husband, Eddie, wants to be a father to the baby that he had with another woman, Delilah. In the end — after having a conversation with her assistant, played by Sam Pancake — Katherine decides she is going to make it work with Eddie. She even sort of makes nice with Delilah, but it is Gary — and his one nipple — who breaks the ice and makes Katherine feel at home around the group.

Meanwhile, Regina is taking that money from Rome’s Lexus commercials and buying out her business partner, which comes just in time, because a storm knocks out the power to her restaurant. Regina, however, turns lemons into … lemon chicken with tarragon. She makes dinner for the electric company workers. It’s a cheesy storyline, but it works.

Meanwhile, things heat up in next week’s episode, which sees Gary expressing jealousy about Eric and Maggie; Katherine wanting to move to Austin; and Regina angry with Rome for using their life as inspiration for his Lexus commercial. Who is the dude asking for John?
