I became familiar with Mel Brooks through Space Balls. My brothers and I loved Star Wars, but our older cousin Evan was visiting and insisted we watch Space Balls. The rest is history (of the world). While I did not seek out Mr. Brooks’s work at the time (I was, like, seven), eventually, I grew to love him. That was thanks to a movie called History of the World: Part 1.

History of the World: Part 1 was a revelation for me. I had difficulty concentrating at school and would make light of things to keep myself interested. There was an adult doing the same thing! Also, he was hilarious. Any joke I made about Jesus during CCD was nothing compared to the Last Supper scene. My mind was opened.

Soon the world will be blessed with more History of the World in the form of History Of The World: Part 2 (a sequel my young mind assumed already existed). This time Brooks has help from comedians Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz, as well as a slew of guest stars. A new trailer just dropped, showing off the enormous cast. Some real heavy hitters are joining the fun this time around. I’m most excited for Quinta Brunson and Jason Mantzoukas. There’s also a scene that seems to be a William Shakespeare Writers’ Room, which is a hilarious idea.

Brooks is back, baby! He’s got some new friends, some new history, and I’m excited about it all.
