“Day Drinking with Seth” is probably the only late-night segment that is actually damaging to the health of the host, which is why Seth Meyers has to deploy the gimmick sparingly. There have been some great editions of this, from the OG with Kelly Clarkson to Dua Lipa’s failed attempt to keep up with Seth, to the Kristen Stewart edition, where she somehow remained aloof and cool no matter her level of inebriation.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of my favorites, however, because Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a 63-year-old cancer survivor, and she’s not trying to impress anyone. She will only play along to the extent that she wants to play along, and if Seth gives her a shitty drink, she’s not going to swallow it. She’s happy to get drunk, but she won’t drink awful things.
She still manages to be a lot of fun, although my favorite part is when she is asked who her favorite “Weekend Update” anchor is. She does not say Seth, nor does she say her own husband, Brad Hall, who was an “Update” anchor in the ’80s: Her favorites were Tina and Amy. I also love their nostalgia for the simple times, back when the worst thing in politics was when the VP shot a man in the face.
