Death is inescapable. Most people die before their time. A rare few overstay their welcome. Regardless of creed, color, or orientation, death is devastating and can change how someone views the world. Even getting close to death can alter one’s perception. Everything else is put on hold when the preciousness of life is brought into focus. That was evident last night when Jimmy Kimmel kicked off his show.
This week, the legendary Norman Lear passed away at the phenomenal age of 101. His legacy is a rich one. Television as we know it would not exist without him. He was also beloved by many. The outpouring of love and support was immediate. The shock and surprise, despite his age, show how loved he was. The emotion on Jimmy Kimmel’s face is undeniable.
Kimmel and Lear became close while producing reruns of some of Lear’s greatest shows. The productions were spectacular, by the way. Live television is mesmerizing for a reason. Add material that has only gotten stronger with age, and you’ve got a surefire hit. After discussing these shows, Kimmel reads from a letter Lear sent him last year, and I’ll save that for the video.
The world lost a monumental human being. There will never be another Norman Lear. It isn’t possible. The television landscape isn’t the same. The world isn’t the same. He captured people’s hearts at a time when everyone was watching the same thing. He had all eyes on him and not only didn’t break under pressure, he grew stronger and stronger.
