I am an unapologetic fan of the hospital drama New Amsterdam, a sweetly sentimental series that took on social justice issues in the medical context. It’s one of those series that ultimately concluded not because ratings were bad but because the ratings could not support the cost of the show in a sixth or seventh season. What do we know about popular shows that can’t afford to continue beyond four or five seasons? They get spin-offs! It’s even better when the series gained a huge new audience in the intervening year on Netflix.

When New Amsterdamended last year, the final episode saw Dr. Max Goodwin leave the hospital as the medical director while a flash-forward 30 years into the future sees Max’s daughter taking over as medical director in 2053.

That is where the potential new sequel/spin-off will pick up: Thirty years into the future when Max’s daughter Luna Goodwin is overseeing the largest public hospital in America as it “explores the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future.” That’s interesting to me because while AI is abominable in the creative context, I am genuinely excited to see what it can do in 30 years in the medical context (or even in five years).

In other words, New Amsterdam Tomorrow will probably be the same sweetly sentimental series that takes on social justice issues, only now it will technically be a sci-fi series informed by future developments in medicine. It’s being developed by the creator of the original series, David Schulner. It’s unclear if Molly Griggs, who played Luna Goodwin in the New Amsterdam finale, would reprise the role. Also unclear: Whether legit hoverboards will exist in 2053.
