Yorgos Lanthimos Reteams with Emma and Viggo Goes West In Three Trailers

For the most part, I’m a fan of modern-day Westerns. It depends on the cast, though. The Dead Don’t Hurt should be a home run because it was written, directed by and stars Viggo Mortensen. When I think about Viggo I think about this and I’m immediately interested in whatever it is. The Dead Don’t Hurt also stars Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Jason Clarke, Danny Huston, Garret Dillahunt, Colin Morgan (Merlin), and Lance Henriksen. These are all actors I like! But something about this trailer rubs me the wrong way. It feels like a white male wish-fulfillment story where Viggo rides off to fight a war and comes home to avenge his wife’s honor. Somethingsomething Virtuous Western Frontier Hero somethingsomething. I don’t know why women need to get beaten up for men to be heroes.

The Dead Don’t Hurt will open in theaters on May 31st.

Have you heard about this director, Yorgos Lanthimos? I believe he directed something that was both popular and wildly divisive this past awards season? And a few times before that too. A rolling stone gathers no moss, as they say. Lanthimos is ready to go with his next film, Kinds Of Kindness. It’s described as

a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

Kinds Of Kindness stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau (The Menu), Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie (Unicorn Store, Archive 81), and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria). It opens in select theaters on June 21st.

When your dad is David Cronenberg, you have a 50/50 chance of developing a quirky, dark sense of humor. If not, you probably end up living in Midian. Humane is Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature film debut as a director, and it looks very entertaining.

It stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Peter Gallagher and will premiere in theaters on April 26.

This week’s lagniappe isn’t a trailer, but it’s only five minutes long so I thought I might be able to sneak it in anyway. Sony Pictures released a short Spider-Verse film directly to YouTube earlier this week. As all things Spider-Verse it is beautifully animated. It’s basically a PSA for making space for your mental health and you’ll want to hug Miles Morales at the end. Enjoy!
