Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers Talk 2024 ‘Las Culturistas’ Culture Awards

Bestie comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers are back for another year of the Las Culturistas Culture Awards, a romping parody of awards shows in which the podcast hosts present awards for moments in culture from the past year with up to 100 categories, including “The Cate Blanchett Award for Good Acting” and “Best Taylor Swift.”

Ceremonies past were held outdoors at Lincoln Center, but this year’s ceremony on June 15th will move indoors to the Kings Theater in Brooklyn.

“We are moving indoors so that people can enjoy upholstered seating, finally. I think people are too used to uncomfortable posterior resistance. I think they’re used to hard plastic chairs. Since our basement days, we have not given them a full awards show experience. And we are aiming to give that holistic packaging of being an honest-to-goodness awards show,” says Yang.

This year also differs in that it will be ticketed, with presale opening at 10 a.m. ET on April 3rd for Las Culturistas listeners, Live Nation presale the same time next day, and general ticket sales the same time the day after that. It’s going to be as competitive to get tickets to the Culture Awards as it is to get Taylor Swift tickets, and they’re not even sure Swift will make a video appearance like she did last year.

“If she wants to send in a video that would be great. Our message to her and [her publicist] Tree Paine is ‘Help us, help you. Play ball.’ But she may not be in her sending-videos-to-fake-awards-shows era any more,” said Rogers.

Yang and Rogers encourage their podcast listeners to campaign for their favorite nominees.

“I think campaigns have really tipped the scales in a perfectly reasonable way that we celebrate, that we really love. It’s what awards are all about. It’s about passion and money and volume,” Yang said of the fervor of campaigning fans.

The Culture Awards just keep getting bigger and more mainstream, and the hosts aren’t slowing down anytime soon. They joke that they won’t stop until the likes of Glenn Close or Amy Adams grace their stage.

“We can’t see the future, but I think what we can see so far is that we have no intention of stopping, and that is a threat.”
