It’s been a wild few years on The Goldbergs. The series lost cast member George Segal after the legendary actor’s passing; Jeff Garlin exited the series amid three years of HR complaints; and while few remember it in the wake of Garlin’s exit, the series also parted ways with Bryan Callen in 2020 after four women accused him of sexual misconduct (Callen was a regular on The Goldbergs and its spin-off, Schooled). Two weeks ago, the series also received a lot of attention for the way it digitally inserted Jeff Garlin’s character into the wedding of Hayley Orrantia’s Erica Goldberg.
And yet after all of that, the series remains a solid ratings performer for ABC. Even with three cast members departing the series, and all three of the Goldberg children graduating to college, it appears as though the series is still poised to return for a 10th season. Though ABC has not yet made a renewal official, Sony Television Pictures has closed a deal with Wendi McLendon-Covey — who plays Beverly Goldberg — to return for a 10th season, a precursor to a renewal.
Agreed!

I am not entirely sure how this will work, unless The Goldbergs becomes primarily a show about Beverly Goldberg, which would be fine. Two of her children, Erica and Barry, attend nearby UPenn, but Adam Goldberg — whose namesake created the series — is headed to NYU and will room with his best friend, Dave Kim, unless the series decides to hold him back in Pennsylvania if, say, Murray Goldberg were to die on the series.
The family sitcom is not as good as it once was, but it has been surprisingly adept at adapting to changes with both the characters and the departing actors. There’s no reason Beverly cannot continue to helicopter parent her children while they’re in college, and the death of her husband will give her character some opportunities to maybe even break out of her sitcom mold. Basically, I just want to see if the series can go out on a high note without the burden of Garlin and time enough for the writers to prepare for a full season without any more upheaval.
Congratulations Wendi on the 200th episode of the Goldbergs. You wear my suit very well and even though your hair is blonder you channel me perfectly and make me look so good. Thank you for your comic genius over the last nine years lots of love from all the Goldbergs pic.twitter.com/xJoIbw5tYe
