Turns Out, 'SNL's' 'Weekend Update' Anchor, Michael Che, is Kind of a Dick

Many of you may have seen the video that went viral yesterday where a woman walks around New York City for ten hours while men catcall and harass her. It gives us a fairly good idea of how pervasive and unsettling catcalling assholes are in the city. Some of those catcalls, of course, were complementary in nature, while others were straight-up vulgar. One guy straight-up walked next to her for seven minutes. It was disturbing.

The video has been seen over 15 million times so far, and a reasonable person’s takeaway from it would probably be, “Damn. (Some) men suck.” If I were a woman, I’d want to walk around the city with my middle finger extended at all times, though I suspect that would only encourage the catcalling.

Anyway, Michael Che — the new anchor on SNL’s “Weekend Update,” and my favorite part about this season, so far — decided to make a joke of it. A poor, insensitive, thoughtless joke that completely minimized the activity in the video and attempted to trivialize the harassment. This is what he posted on Instagram.

When people began to take issue with Che’s “joke,” at first he kind of attempted to explain himself:

But instead of apologizing for being a dick, or simply letting it go, he doubled-down on his douchitude and “apologized” for his “apology.”

Now, at this point, Michael Che is being a straight-up asshole, and a lot of other websites began to take issue with Che. Did Che back down? Nope. He began retweeting negative tweets, as though he were fucking proud of himself for being an asshole:

I mean, dude: Come on. Don’t be a fratty fuck-O about this. Maybe it was a joke. Maybe it was even a misguided but well-intentioned joke (though, that’s hard to see from my perspective), but when enough people take issue, don’t boast about being a dick to thousands of people (or more). Either suck it up, recognize your new position of authority in our culture, and realize that your “joke” is only going to encourage other dudes to make similar jokes, and then apologize, or at the very fucking least, shut up and let it go. You’re only making it worse.

Do NOT make me like Colin Jost more than you, man. Not cool.
