Supergirl hits theaters this weekend, and this isn’t CNN, so I don’t have to be objective here: I hope it does well. I’ve heard good things from people I trust (The film is surprisingly more Mad Max than Guardians of the Galaxy), and I’m a fan of what James Gunn has been doing with his fledgling DCU. Slap Lanterns right into my veins.
Unfortunately, Supergirl’s box office tracking is looking rough, and it’s up against Toy Story 5’s second weekend, which will undoubtedly be a juggernaut. If Supergirl bombs, it will only fuel the absolute weirdos who Milly Alcock triggered by accurately predicting their weirdness. She had their number.
Case in point: Alcock presciently told Vanity Fair, “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies,” and that dynamic played out literally when a photographer reached out and touched the Supergirl star’s back at Monday night’s New York City premiere. Superman himself, David Corenswet, caught the perp red-handed, and he was not having that malarkey.
In a now-viral clip, you can see Corenswet swoop into action below, and people are going nuts over him defending Alcock. They love it. Even though there’s no audio, you can practically hear him saying “What the hey?” in full Supes-mode. As of this morning, the clip below has racked up millions of views, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that number doubled by the time this post publishes in the afternoon. In a world where the president’s swamp is drowning baby ducks in liquid corruption, it’s nice to see something wholesome.
“But, Mike, doesn’t this just reinforce traditional gender roles?” Fair question, but don’t worry, the movie refreshingly has that topic under control. We’re good here.
