In a wild casting swerve that absolutely no one saw coming, Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in talks to join The Batman Part II. While that was a bombshell in and of itself, the news arrived with an additional and equally surprising detail: Zoë Kravitz is reportedly not returning as Catwoman.
I heard rumblings that Zoë’s people were shutting down questions about The Batman sequel while she was promoting Caught Stealing. If these reports are true, well, that would explain that.
As for Johansson’s role in the film, Variety has little in the way of details. Matt Reeves and James Gunn have kept things very close to the chest as the sequel took so long to come together that some people — we won’t name names — were convinced it was cancelled. Judging by recent developments, clearly, this thing is happening. (Zoë’s exit is an interesting wrinkle though.) A horrible track record at predictions aside, my current dork theory is Johansson is playing Andrea Beaumont from Mask of the Phantasm. That’s probably going to be wrong, but I’ve been following this sequel obsessively, and it tracks with some things that Reeves has said.
Obviously, landing ScarJo is a major casting coup, making her the first Avenger to jump from Marvel to DC Studios. Disney did her dirty with Black Widow, so this is definitely one way to stick it to them. That said, this franchise already has a perfectly good Cristin Milioti sitting right there. If you’re not going to bring back Catwoman, at least let her half-sister chew some more scenery.
