Last month, my boss Mr. Rowles had reason to declare that Timothy Olyphant is “one of the all-time best late-night talk show guests.” I don’t disagree with him (for once), but I’d like to humbly suggest another celebrity that just might give Olyphant a run for his money: Zoë Kravitz. Sure, Olyphant comes to the couch with charm, camaraderie, and pre-planned bits, but Kravitz has stories. And not just stories from set, or stories about whatever project she’s promoting; her stories are about her bonkers, impossibly cool life.
Remember when she turned up on Kimmel to spin a yarn about the time Prince invited himself to her afterparty and made her be his wingman while he tried to pick up some lady? I guess when your mom is Lisa Bonet and your dad is Lenny Kravitz (and your godmother is Marisa Tomei), having a random night with Prince is just A Thing That Happens To You!
And speaking of her mom, Kravitz came to Late Night with Seth Meyers this week armed with one helluva story about an adventure she had with Lisa Bonet … and Lisa Bonet’s pet snake, Orpheus. The short version is that, during the L.A. wildfires, Zoë and her mom had to evacuate their homes. So they ended up crashing at Taylor Swift’s house for a couple of weeks (you know, as one does). But just as Zoë was packing up to leave, her mom’s snake, uh, found a hole in the bathroom wall. While Lisa gripped the snake’s tail and fought a losing battle to pull it from the wall, Zoë faced the hardest decision any houseguest has ever had to make: “I was like, either we destroy her bathroom or I have to tell her that there’s a snake somewhere in her house.” Anyway, hilarity and some serious interior reconstruction ensued.
For the long version, listen to Zoë tell it (the story starts at around the six-minute mark). What I love is that, as good as this story is, I can’t help but imagine the next time Taylor Swift does a late-night show and busts out her “Zoë Kravitz renovated my bathroom” story.
