Earlier this month, news broke that Scarlett Johansson is circling The Batman Part II, which is obviously a major casting coup given her history with Marvel. It also firmly put to bed the pervasive rumors that the Robert Pattinson sequel was on the verge of being cancelled. In short, big stuff all around!
With ScarJo reportedly in the mix, the rumor mill is doing what it does best and cranking out theory after theory about she might be playing. I was surprised to see a bunch of people take the same shot in the dark as me and latch onto Andrea Beaumont from Mask of the Phantasm. That seems to be the most prominent fan theory, but for the record, we’re all just speculating wildly because no one has seen the script.
Well, now, we have our first “insider” report, and I’m going to be frank. I don’t buy it. Via Gizmodo:
According to ol’ Jeff Sneider, the ex-Avenger has possibly joined DC’s incoming sequel to play Gilda Gold, aka the wife of future Two-Face Harvey Dent. Sneider alleges a “well-placed agency source” told him the film has three big new roles in Dent, Gilda, and Dent’s abusive father Christopher. Actors in their 40s are to play the couple—Johansson turned 41 back in November—while a man in his 60s will portray the father.
Hitting Harvey Dent again doesn’t entirely track with Matt Reeves’ remarks that the villain has “never really been done in a movie before.” Christopher Nolan just did Dent in The Dark Knight… 17 years ago?! Why is my own post trying to murder me? What the hey, dude?
That said, Harvey’s wife has never appeared in a movie before, and so I guess that would count. But, man, I really hope that’s not the case. I get The Long Halloween inspiration, but again, Nolan pulled heavily from that graphic novel, too. There are other Batman stories out there, folks.
Of course, the biggest red flag is this news comes Jeff Sneider, who doesn’t have the greatest batting average. (I’ll go lay in traffic.) This is just my two cents, but ScarJo as Gilda Gold is probably as real as Brad Pitt joining the movie. But I’ve been wrong several hundred times before. Just ask my wife and kids.
