I was supposed to have a good, stress-free day, goddammit. My kids start kindergarten today, and that’s more than enough to deal with. We almost did daycare in July, but it was too expensive, and we didn’t want to have to send them off each day for a month, so they stayed with me while I worked from home. All summer. It was hard, and the absolute best. I know some parents who have been like, “Thank God, they’re going back!” To each their own, but I couldn’t be further from that. I’ll miss my little dudes, and I’m going to channel that emotion into some anger for the FCC.
The President has thoroughly weaponized the department. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. He has used it to bully, threaten, and harass. Brendan Carr, who “SUCKS” (I asked my kids for a quote. They’re eating breakfast right now. Chants of “Boo that guy” are being accompanied by “I think he kinda stinks”; I’m gonna start crying again), has become the President’s personal free-speech assailant, going after folks like Jimmy Kimmel, whom Carr got suspended around a year ago.
Now he’s at it again, having threatened Kimmel for wanting to interview a candidate for the Texas Senate, James Talarico. Because of that, the interview will be moved to YouTube (more on that in a sec). As Kimmel points out, the hypocrisy is through the roof, as the President had no issues going on the show when he was running in 2015 and 2016. Kimmel then encourages his audience to register to vote, and I’d like to remind you to do the same while we’re here.
You can feel the anger and frustration emanating from Kimmel. As many will probably assume, there’s a decent chance the interview will do better on YouTube than it would have on air, especially with all the free press it will now get. People want to see what those in power don’t want them to see. That’s just how it works. Regardless, Kimmel has every right to be angry here, no matter how many more people will see it. He shouldn’t have to do this.
This also comes after rumors began swirling that Kimmel’s contract would not be renewed when it runs up in May of 2027, something Disney quickly shot down. At this point, I wouldn’t blame him if he just walked away. He could do the job elsewhere, or just decide it’s not worth doing at all anymore. He’s often talked about wanting to spend more time with his kids, and as someone who just had to put his kids in different classes for the first time, I can’t say that I blame him.
