Jimmy Kimmel Leads the Way in Late-Night's Response to Minneapolis

I watched all the late-night monologues from last night, and they approached the weekend’s horrors in Minnesota a little differently. Jon Stewart mostly did his usual thing: Comedy and self-righteous fury, taking particular aim at the Republicans’ hypocrisy for both gaslighting and the Second Amendment. Seth Meyers went all in on how unpopular ICE is in America now. Colbert returned to the important words of our Declaration of Independence while also honoring Alex Pretti.

But it was Jimmy Kimmel who, in my view, struck the right tone: Comedy is hugely important right now, but so is authenticity. It’s OK to be choked up by what we’re seeing, even on a late-night entertainment program. And also plead with the right to see the light. Please.

“I’m convinced now that the only people who can stop it are on the right. I know it takes a lot of courage to go against your tribe, or whatever, but that’s what we need. Some decent people on the right to show some courage and common sense,” he said. “Is this the law and order you voted for? … Does anyone on either side believe this is good leadership?”

If there’s one YouTube clip you watch from last night’s late-night programs, let it be this one.
